The next morning we drove to the Varusschlacht Museum and Park at Kalkriese. This is an archaeological site with an open air museum. It is believed to be at the site of one of the battles that took place in 9AD between three Roman Leigons and a confederation of Germanic tribes headed by Arminius a German chieftain. It took place over 3 days and the Roman Legions were annihilated and reputedly the course of European History was changed.
After our visit to Kalkriese we made our way to the picturesque town of Tecklenburg for "Kaffee und Kuchen".
The descriptions in the following pdf expand on these places.
